As the voice behind our online presence, you'll design, implement, and evaluate dynamic communication strategies across various platforms to showcase the Library's brand, services, and expertise. Your role will be pivotal in organizing and producing innovative content, engaging with followers, and making data-driven decisions to enhance our impact.

The Social Media Specialist provides leadership and professional expertise in the areas of social media campaigns and channel management for Cornell University Library, including follower engagement, marketing, analytics, and creative content development. The Social Media Specialist creates original and engaging content while also monitors and responds to account activity and leads the efforts to remain relevant, engaging and leading- edge social media content that effectively and successfully tells the Library’s story and is aligned with an integrated communications plan.
This hybrid position is located in Ithaca, New York. You will typically be asked to perform this role remotely at a location in the United States 2 days a week and on-campus 3 days a week. The University must approve the desired remote work location. The University reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time. Depending on your work location, you may receive multiple tax forms. Tax implications related to the home work area are your responsibility and you are advised to consult with a tax expert. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position.
Summary of position responsibilities:
Organize, create, and produce well-conceived and crafted content to build and strengthen engagement of both internal and external audiences.
Responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating creative communication strategies and comprehensive campaigns/projects using a wide variety of social media channels to effectively promote the Library’s brand, services, goals, and expertise to its various audiences.
Develop and maintain a social media content calendar.
Stays abreast of and advises on current trends and accessibility best practices in social media platforms and tools, collaboratively adjusts content strategy on existing channels, and/or on new channels.
Makes and implements data-driven decisions to maximize the impact of our social channels by using analytics to monitor, analyze, and act on relevant metrics.
Makes proactive recommendations and collaboratively adjusts social media strategy based on tracking and reporting on sentiment, reach, engagement, conversions, risk factors, and other indicators. Serve as a Social Media Ambassador, working closely with University Relations New Media to develop and implement social media policy, training, and best practices in the Library, including recommending the consolidation of accounts as appropriate to maximize reach and strategy.
Coordinates with multiple stakeholders across campus to achieve effective and cohesive communication results.
Attends Library events, often outside of regular business hours as needed, to create and share timely and quality content.
Participate in Library Communications’ creative activities beyond social media.
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Minimum education and experience equivalency:
Bachelor’s degree with 2 to 4 years of experience in communications/marketing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Successful experience in the creation of compelling content for digital platforms such as photography, video, and multimedia to craft engaging content for a wide variety of channels and audiences.
Successful professional experience developing distribution strategies for an organization for both established and emerging social media platforms.
Excellent interpersonal, writing and communication skills; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Good judgment; and understanding of the higher education environment.
Successful experience creating and maintaining fruitful working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Successful experience using social media monitoring and analysis to drive decisions and plans.
Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and well-being.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience promoting higher education or cultural institutions.
Proven experience managing one or more social media accounts for an established brand/organization.
