The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Budget and Finance specialist to support the areas of financial planning and analysis in alignment with the College’s long and short-term strategic goals. This position will assist in the areas of budget development, account monitoring and reconciliation, and financial reporting, including management of internal and external financial commitments. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Support the College of Veterinary Medicine’s primary instruction, research and public service missions by carrying out responsibilities in a manner that promotes sound, data-informed decision-making, financial stewardship, and overall financial health.
Prepare routine and ad hoc summaries of complex financial activity (budgets, trend analyses, forecasts) for a variety of audiences including College executives, departments and fellow team members.
Monitor and reconcile College and departmental commitment activity from various funding sources, including College and University limited-term commitments and funding agreements.
Process various financial transactions including budget adjustments, transfers of funds, salary expense transfers and others, including those to assist with maintaining the College’s chart of accounts.
Contribute to developing the annual operating and capital budgets, including assisting administrative and academic departments in interpreting College policies, procedures and strategic goals, and preparing planning documents.
Required Qualifications
Associate’s degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a diverse range of stakeholders
Experience applying basic accounting principles, financial reconciliation, and analysis in a professional setting
Demonstrated proficiency using Excel to perform sophisticated tasks
Ability to structure and analyze financial data with minimal oversight and to collaborate with fellow team members in the review and presentation of financial data and information.
Ability to work quickly and steadily while under pressure in a dynamic environment with evolving demands, requiring regular re-evaluation of priorities while maintaining a positive, problem solving, results-oriented demeanor.
Strong ability to analyze, reconcile and validate a range of complex financial and related data with minimal oversight to ensure the success of projects and identify opportunities for improving reporting and data infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration or finance, and 3 or more years of experience.
Experience in a fund accounting, higher education, or similar complex financial environment.
Demonstrated proficiency in using other common reporting and business intelligence solutions such as QuickSight, Tableau, OAS, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Power BI for Excel or similar tools.
Experience using common data querying and transformation tools or methods including Microsoft Power BI for Excel, Tableau Prep Builder, SQL, data joins or similar tools or methods.
Experience in common business systems including, but not limited to, Kuali Financial System, OAS, Workday, Longview and other similar, relevant systems.
Curiosity and a growth mindset.
Important Details about the Position
This is a fully remote position.
We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
