The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. The American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program (AIISP) at Cornell University in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) provides a unique combination of educational, social and cultural opportunities to Indigenous students studying at the University. Our commitment is to facilitate students’ academic success and address their cultural needs. The program is dedicated to educating Native and non-Native students who will study and contribute to the revitalization of Indigenous peoples globally. AIISP also is responsible for graduate and undergraduate academic programs, recruitment and retention, facilitating research partnerships with Indigenous communities, and is the host of the residential program house, Akwe:kon.
Position Summary:

Campus Collaboration: This position will work collaboratively with CALS Office of Academic Programs (OAP) teams; CALS majors and departments; numerous programs and units across campus and will have an ongoing connection to other university partners engaged in student support and success.
The Student Support Specialist reports to the AIISP Associate Director with a dotted line to the CALS Office of Academic Programs to provide: information and referral to students; planning and coordination of student programs for retention and enrichment; student recruitment; and program administration for Native American / Indigenous students at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and professional). Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assist with the collection and maintenance of student data, analysis and program records; assist in AIISP program planning with the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of University and AIISP services for Native American / Indigenous students; work closely with AIISP Associate Director, AIIS Director of Graduate Studies and AIIS Director of Undergraduate studies to develop programming and manage budgets for graduate and undergraduate retention and recruitment programs, promotion of the AIIS minor and other academic initiatives; develop and maintain strong working relationships with University and College Admissions Offices, Diversity Programs, Academic Services, Financial Aid, Dean of Students, Campus Life, Cooperative Extension, Faculty, and Graduate and Professional Schools; serve as advisor to student groups and may occasionally represent the AIISP at national, regional, and state levels; process all graduate student tuition, health insurance and awards in PeopleSoft and stipends in Workday; process undergraduate student fellowships and awards; work with Native American Summer College students and Pre-freshman Summer Program (PSP); and remain current on emerging issues and trends in Indigenous and higher education w/respect to Native / Indigenous students.

Required Qualifications:
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Bachelor’s degree required (Social Science, Humanities, or Education preferred).
Minimum of two years of experience working directly with college students.
Experience in recruiting underrepresented minorities/ Native American and program development is highly desired.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, required.
Must exercise sound judgment and respect highly confidential information.
Must have the ability to multi-task and the ability to prioritize; and to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students.
Prior experience gathering data and prepare reports.
Proven team player with strong analytical and creativity skills.
Ability to work at student events nights and weekends.
Ability to travel for recruiting prospective students; also travel to local and national student events.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in Student Personnel or Higher Education or closely related field preferred.
