While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.
As a core member of the Cornell Cinema team, the Head Projectionist/Technical Supervisor is responsible for overseeing technical logistics for approximately 200 film screenings and special events annually. Key responsibilities include projecting films and overseeing audio-visual production for public screenings, courses, and special events; inspecting and preparing film materials and other relevant media; training and supervising a team of student projectionists; and maintaining technical infrastructure in Willard Straight Theatre — including 35mm, 16mm, and digital cinema projectors and lighting, sound, and video equipment — in consultation with university staff and external vendors. The head projectionist also sets routines, practices, and policies regarding the projection booth in accordance with university regulations; researches and recommends new equipment purchases; and assists the Cinema Director with procuring screening materials from various archives, distributors, and filmmakers.
The Head Projectionist/Technical Supervisor reports jointly to the Cinema Manager and the Cinema Director and will join the Cornell Cinema team at a dynamic moment in our organization’s history. The ideal candidate will bring a commitment to high presentation standards, an enthusiasm for mentoring student projectionists, experience collaboratively executing live events, and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues as they arise.
This position requires regular night and weekend work, including a willingness to be on call to troubleshoot unanticipated technical difficulties. The expectation is for this position to work on campus with some flexibility to work remotely outside our screening season, which primarily follows the Cornell academic calendar.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 2-3 years’ experience working as a projectionist with 35mm film and digital cinema projectors, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with other specialized audio-visual equipment.
Bachelor’s degree or advanced training in film, archival studies, or related field strongly preferred.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and proven technical experience troubleshooting digital media and mechanical issues.
Capacity to simultaneously manage multiple areas, events, and deadlines with careful attention to detail.
Knowledge of current media technologies and ability to develop skills with new technologies, applications, and equipment independently and in a timely manner.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to communicate technical information to a varied audience, including students, faculty, technicians, and the public.
Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to work an irregular schedule and provide flexible coverage during the academic year.
Ability to traverse multiple flights of stairs and lift 50 lbs.
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Preferred Qualifications:
In-depth knowledge and experience with archival moving image practices.
Enthusiasm for or previous experience managing and training students.
Familiarity with analog, digital, and mechanical cinema infrastructure and technologies, including file sharing platforms, digital cinema servers, audio systems, and various projectors.
Experience working with and maintaining Simplex 35mm projectors, Eiki 16mm projectors, and DCI-compliant digital cinema projectors/servers is desirable.
