CLASSE Safety Associate
Unit Safety Specialist I - Band F
Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE)
WHO WE ARE
The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies particle beams and accelerators, photon science, particle physics and the early universe, and serves students, the public and scientists from Cornell and around the world. The research missions of this laboratory are, in many respects, unique in the world.
CLASSE holds no higher priority than ensuring the health and safety of all personnel, collaborators, and facility visitors. These values are woven into the fabric of laboratory administration and operation. A strong relationship with Cornell University EHS provides important policy guidance, institutional support, and oversight. CLASSE faces unique challenges in addressing the sometimes-disparate needs of faculty, staff, students, collaborators, and visitors – a diverse community.
The CLASSE approach to safety is built around three overlapping commitments to:
Continuously provide a safe laboratory environment
Engender an abiding culture of safety in all personnel
Address and anticipate safety challenges with proactive safety management
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Safety Lead (SL) and Safety Associate (SA) together implement EHS’s safety directives to fulfill the above commitments in coordination with the CLASSE Director. The university strives to empower all personnel to advocate for their own safety as well as that of their co-workers. The SA achieves program goals by:
Administering the CLASSE Safety Program under supervision of & in collaboration with the SL and EHS.
Coordinate safety program duties under direction from the SL in a manner that accounts for each other’s skills, strengths, and availability.
Ensure the safety of CLASSE areas and programs as pertaining to hazardous materials, radiation (ionizing and nonionizing), as well as occupational and laboratory safety.
Manage documentation for and serve as a member of the CLASSE Safety Committee, which reviews successes and failures of the safety program and governs the development of CLASSE specific programs, policies, and procedures.
Administer the CLASSE radiation dosimetry program, survey meter calibration/maintenance, and assist with radiation program responsibilities.
Be responsive to Cornell EHS’s lab assessments and inspections, addressing findings and completing corrective actions as required by EHS.
