We are looking for a passionate and accomplished safety professional to join us as an Operational Safety Advisory Manager to lead a team of high performing Operational Safety Advisors and other regional members of the Safety Team, in enabling and providing tactical safety support to colleagues across two licences areas (East and West Midlands) of National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED).
Reporting to the Head of Safety, you will support them in delivering the safety strategy and implementing safety standards to drive safety performance across NGED. Using your excellent stakeholder management and relationship building abilities you will develop and maintain excellent relationships with key stakeholders across the business and represent Safety, Health & Environment as needed.
Leading, managing, and motivating the Safety Advisory & Operational Support team, you will develop a culture of high performance and delivery against KPIs.
The role can be based within our East Midlands and West Midlands licence areas. We continue to offer hybrid working and there will be a requirement travel across the UK.
• Ensure effective line of sight between teams' performance deliverables, work activities, NGED safety ambition and local operational safety deliverables.
• Own, enable, and maintain a seamless and effective engagement with senior Operational Leads to ensure thorough management of safety performance.
• Collaborate effectively with leaders across the SHE team to ensure Safety initiatives, programs and plans are fit for purpose and deliverable.
• Support, in a senior capacity, in the resolution of safety matters and driving quality across the licences areas in improving e-2-e incident management performance.
• Represent the SHE team and deputise for the Head of SaOS at senior internal and external safety engagements.
• Support the delivery of regional public safety campaigns
• Promote continuous improvement to create and sustain world class safety performance.
• Develop and maintain a technical team who can provide technical safety and SME advice on behalf of NGED, and contribute to the development and implementation of NGED’s’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Drive a mature safety culture, incl. facilitation of the bi-annual Group safety survey, NGED specific ad hoc survey etc.
• Identify and manage key safety risks and issues including development & implementation of safety campaigns appropriate to the needs of our business.
• Raise safety capability, including training and comms
• Engage with senior NGED stakeholders to drive accountability and positive outcomes for incident reporting, supporting accident and incident investigations to establish root causes, providing expert advice, support and guidance on legal framework, internal policies and communicate learning points.
• Proactively engage and contribute to the Group Major Hazard Asset framework governance process and series of meetings.
• Maintain an effective interface with relative safety industry regulators and network association.
• Effective leadership skills with the ability to develop a high performing team – someone who identifies and leverages strengths and potential within the team and creates cohesion across different functional areas.
• Proven experience in directing organisational safety change programs.
• Relevant safety related qualification e.g. degree, NEBOSH Diploma, CMIOSH, HNC or equivalent
• Membership of, IOSH (GRAD IOSH minimum).
• Detailed understanding and appreciation of operational safety risks and controls within the electricity distribution industry.
• An exceptional communicator, with the people skills to build effective relationships at all levels of business up to ExCo level and with external contacts – suppliers.
• A relentless passion and drive for safety performance and culture.
• Knowledge of the Energy Sector and National Grid’s place in the industry.
• Resilient with the confidence and strength to question behaviours and issues.
• Well-developed collaboration skills to ensure effective cooperation between all parties.

A competitive salary of circa £72,000 dependent on experience.
