Minimum Qualifications You must have four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.
1. Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
2. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
Possession of a CDL at time of hire is not mandatory but is preferred.
Possession of a NYS inspection license at the time of hire is not mandatory but is preferred.
Duties Description 1. Maintain and repair vehicles and heavy construction equipment.
2. Conduct NYS motor vehicle inspections on appropriate motor vehicles, including heavy equipment.
3. Prepare work orders to account for work performed.
4. Diagnose and repair equipment malfunction.
5. Perform related field work as required to support the mission of the DEC.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 75 pounds.
Must obtain NYS motor vehicle inspection license within 12 months of appointment.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
