Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the New York State Fair Public Safety Manager will have a bachelor’s degree in Public Safety, Emergency Management, Security Administration, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field and at least five years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role directly related to public safety, security management, or emergency management. Four years of specialized experience or an associate’s degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree; J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
Duties Description The Public Safety Manager oversees safety, security, and emergency management at the New York State Fair, supervising the Emergency Management Coordinator and Supervisor of Security Services. They lead the development and implementation of safety strategies and foster innovation by integrating new technologies. The manager ensures continuous improvement and compliance with emergency and security plans, collaborating with law enforcement to address incidents. They oversee the enforcement of health and safety policies, conduct inspections, and organize training to ensure adherence to safety standards. Communication is maintained with stakeholders to promote safety awareness and compliance, and they prepare reports on safety initiatives and incidents. The Manager analyzes data to identify trends and implements corrective actions to enhance safety and security operations.
This is a permanent, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday, with potential for extended and weekend hours as needed. It’s located at the New York State Fairgrounds at 581 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse, NY. We offer a professional and comfortable working environment with ample free parking.
Additional Comments Appointment Process:
The New York State Fair Public Safety Manager is an Exempt Class position within the NYS Civil Service Merit System. Section 41(1) of the Civil Service Law provides that the Exempt Class shall include "all other offices or positions for which the Civil Service Commission has determined it is not practicable to fill by competitive or non-competitive examination." These positions are not tenure-bearing and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Approval for appointment to this position will go through the Budget Director Approval (BDA) process, including a fingerprint background check.
Salary and Benefits:
This is a management/confidential (MC) position that offers a competitive salary range of $100,845-$127,474/year with excellent benefits. Benefits include but are not limited to inexpensive health insurance options, free dental and vision coverage, NYS Pension Plan membership or Voluntary Defined Contribution Plan membership, life insurance coverage, and generous paid time off. Within the first year, you are eligible for 5 days of personal time, 13 vacation days, 8 sick days, and 13 paid holidays!
As a New York State employee, you could potentially qualify to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)! The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your direct student loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan and while working full-time for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets or another eligible employer.
