Job Description: LIBRARY CLERK II DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The work involves the performance of moderately complex library clerical tasks and assisting patrons with both the use of the library collection and general policies/procedures of the library. This class requires a greater degree of autonomy than Library Clerk I, moderate job complexity, and supervisory responsibility. The incumbent has direct public contact, utilizing good customer service skills to provide information and services to library patrons. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher-level Library staff. Supervision is exercised over Library Clerks I, Pages, and Volunteers. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES - Provides information, general assistance, and effective customer service to library patrons in person and by telephone.
- Uses library software to locate library materials, look up information related to patron accounts, and perform data entry into library databases.
- Issues borrower cards according to library procedures.
- Uses and provides non-technical assistance to patrons on library equipment such as computers, tablets, photocopiers, fax machines, and printers.
- Resolves routine issues related to outstanding library fees and patron accounts or library cards; resolves patron complaints.
- Calls patrons to deliver messages or information on library materials.
- Maintains departmental work schedules and compiles data for statistical reports.
- Assigns and reviews work of subordinate staff.
- Answers the telephone, takes messages, transfers calls.
- Performs routine circulation, reserve, and overdue functions.
- Performs routine searches of and updates to computer records.
- Processes, sorts, and shelves or files materials according to library rules and inspects materials for damage.
- Maintains interlibrary loan records.
- Collects, transmits, and secures money.
- Uses software applications in the production of publicity materials such as bookmarks, posters, or flyers.
- Provides assistance with tasks related to the opening and closing of the library facility.
- May transport books and/or library materials from one location to another within a building.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS - Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment as applied to library clerical work.
- Good knowledge of computer applications for office operations including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and calendars.
- Good knowledge of library filing and shelving rules.
- Good knowledge of library services, practices, and ethics.
- Good knowledge of library software used to look up information and access patron accounts.
- Working knowledge of business arithmetic.

- Ability to assist patrons in finding general information and items within the library's collection.
- Ability to operate an alphanumeric keyboard such as a typewriter, terminal, or personal computer accurately--skilled typing is not necessary.

Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Promotion: One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Library Clerk I. Open-Competitive: One (1) year of library clerical experience, or its part time equivalent. NOTE: There is no current civil service list so the person hired in this role will be a "Provisional" hire until the test is given. The individual in the role will need to take the exam and then be reachable from the test list in order to go into permanent status. As a provisional hire, the person hired is eligible for full-time benefits including health and dental insurance. One year of library clerical experience or its part time equivalent is still the minimum qualification.
