Job Description: The Admissions Coordinator is focused on the recruitment and support on campus for Native American and Indigenous students. This position professionally represents Onondaga Community College both on and off-campus to prospective students, parents, families, secondary school counselors and the community. Responsible for proactively identifying, tracking, communicating, and engaging with prospective Native American/Indigenous students in accordance with the College's Strategic Plan, Division Operational Plan, and college recruitment strategy. The Admissions Coordinator organizes student visits and events, including high school visit days, campus tours, college fairs, community events, open houses, and other opportunities designed to interact with and promote the college and its offerings to key audiences. Responsibilities include maintaining knowledge on OCC programs and services as well as best practices and trends in admission in higher education. This position will also oversee the Native American/Indigenous Peoples Center on campus and support current students, alongside their assigned college Navigators, to help successfully complete their academic career at OCC. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Recruit Native American/Indigenous students: - Plan and implement activities, programs and events designed to educate and engage Native American audiences.
- Manage an assigned territory consisting of high schools, community-based organizations and other organizations and special populations, primarily in Central New York with a primary focus on the Haudenosaunee but also including other territories as identified.
- Work with individual prospective applicants through the enrollment process and collaborate and interface with other staff on campus to facilitate a smooth transition for students into the college and into credit or non-credit Workforce Development programs.
- Develop and maintain contact with a caseload of prospective students to include phone, written, and email communications such as live chat, text messaging, and other media as they are introduced.
- Develop and cultivate relationships with a caseload of assigned schools, community-based organizations and other connected organizations and populations including prospective students, families, business partners and school counselors.
- Coordinate and implement admission appointments, application days, presentations, workshops, open houses, career days, college fairs, and other recruitment efforts; conduct tours and visits for prospective students and families.
- Keep current on trends and best practices regarding the community college industry, community trends, workforce development initiatives and student recruitment and make recommendations as appropriate.
- Utilize Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, Slate, to track and manage a caseload of prospective students. Update and maintain records with current information as appropriate.
- Attend professional meetings, conferences, and professional employee development offerings as required.
- Assist students with understanding the financial aid process helping them to secure funding for their educational journey.
- Connect students with national and other Native American scholarship resources.
Oversee the Native American/Indigenous Peoples Center: - Assist students with understanding the financial aid process helping them to secure funding for their educational journey.
- Lead efforts contributing to a welcoming campus environment where Native American students and history, and culture are supported including developing and implementing cultural events with broader Native American community.
- Lead project documentation, assessment efforts, and annual reporting for the Center.
- Manage the Center budget effectively to meet the goals for the Center.
- Act as a resource for and collaborate with colleagues on Native American student success.
- Coordinate professional development to support colleagues in learning about Native American culture and supporting Native American students.
- Hire and train student staff.
Assist Native American/Indigenous students with their success: - Participate in New Student Orientation and Welcome Week helping Native American students with the transition to the College.
- Work in collaboration with navigators to support Native American students serving as a liaison to resolve barriers to success.
- Assist Native American students in achieving their goals utilizing intrusive practices and intervention strategies.
- Partner with others on- and off-campus to connect students to resources for success.
- Holistically support students through one-on-one meetings.
Other Duties: - Assist in the recruitment of non-Native American/Indigenous students.
- Serve as the formal advisor for the Native American Club.
Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Associate Degree.
- A desire to help prospective students meet their educational goals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Experience working with Native and Indigenous students, with an understanding of their unique cultural, educational, and support needs.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.; English and another language will be considered.
- Experience in customer service.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES - Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to bring energy, encouragement, and positive reinforcement to prospective students throughout their application process and beyond.
- Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of Native American and Indigenous students.
- Possess a willingness to take initiative on new projects and embrace change.
- Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills are necessary, including public speaking skills and the ability to present the College in a positive way.
- Must be able to speak before large and small groups with confidence.
- Excellent professional judgment, emotional intelligence, and personal tact.
- Basic familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software tools.
Additional Information: - Salary range is: $45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with credentials and relevant experience.
