Job Description: Foundations Transition Program, a College for Living Program offers year-round instruction to young adults with intellectual disabilities that focuses on developing communication, independence, social and employment skills in a college non-credit setting. BROAD FUNCTION: The College for Living Teacher provides daily instruction and support to students with intellectual disabilities within a classroom setting. Teachers are an integral part of a team of professionals whose goal is to create learning environments in which students realize success by becoming responsible and independent contributors to their surroundings and assume an active role in their personal outcomes. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: - Under general supervision of clinical or higher level staff, teachers provide instruction and support to intellectually disabled individuals in an educational program setting.
- Assist with and support the development of vocational, nutritional, social and personal skills necessary to maintain or achieve the highest possible level of independent functioning in the least restrictive environment.
- Learn the required curriculum and develop appropriate lesson plans based on the specific curriculum.
- Develop and implement individual student goals and execute habilitation plans.
- Observe and record student performance to establish baselines.
- Communicate with families and service providers for the purpose of sharing information.
- Assist students in developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships.
- Teach and reinforce acceptable ways of managing feelings and resolving conflicts.
- Involvement and attendance in all departmental training sessions.
Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - An Associate's degree from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalency.
- Experience working with adults with intellectual disabilities.
- A valid driver's license is required to transport students to some community activities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalency in the areas of education, psychology or related field with commensurate experience working with adults with intellectual disabilities
- Bilingual in English and Spanish. English and other languages will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: - Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to make sound decisions
- Ability to exercise good judgment and possess sensitivity to and understanding of the needs and behaviors of individuals with developmental disabilities
- Ability to develop new and innovative ways of improving instruction and training to students with developmental disabilities
- Ability to model appropriate and respectful behaviors
- Ability to manage a classroom environment
- Ability to demonstrate objective delivery of instruction and behavioral management
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with overlapping deadlines
- Demonstrated skill and ability with technology, including software applications
Additional Information: - Salary range is: $44,000-50,000, commensurate with credentials and relevant experience.
