Job Summary: The Laboratory Support Services Coordinator will work with the Assistant Administrative Laboratory Director in overseeing the Support Services Staff. They need to be proficient in the duties encompassed by the Laboratory Support Staff to include: Central Receiving Technicians, Couriers, Phlebotomists, Waive Testing Technician, and Lab Aides. They will assist in the training, orientation, and scheduling for these staff members. They will oversee the various draw sites to ensure they meet NYSDOH and Joint Commission regulations.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Trained and competent in duties and procedures of phlebotomist.
- Trained and competent in duties and procedures of Waived Testing Technician.
- Trained and competent in duties and procedures of Courier.
- Trained and competent in duties and procedures of Central Receiving Technician.
- Trained and competent in duties and procedures of Laboratory Aide.
- Utilize Laboratory Information System to log specimens, accurately note patient identification, specimen source, collection method, print labels and retrieve data as needed. Enters essential data into the computer system including: patient demographics, test orders, and test results from reference labs.
- Prepare supplies and sort Specimen for courier distribution to labs or reference labs. Perform specimen transport to other labs, if IOTA trained.
- Perform limited assessment of specimen stability, based on guidelines; for example: the tube is leaking or broken; the specimen is not labeled.
- Perform specimen storage and properly discard specimens and/or articles adhering to the Laboratory’s policy and procedure.
- Contact provider and/or customer if the written order is unclear.
- Work with and assist student interns to gain proficiency with their assigned tasks or studies.
- Operate the pneumatic tube system clean and perform routine maintenance as needed.
- Recognize the various names of common therapeutic drugs and the appropriate time to collect specimens for analysis; consistently collects them at the appropriate time.
- Perform routine venipuncture, blood cultures, and capillary blood gasses in accordance with institutional policies.
- Choose and apply appropriate skin disinfectant so test results are not compromised (i.e. betadine for ETOH analysis).
- Accurately label collected specimens with either correct bar code label or appropriate patient name, date, time, DOB and initials. Ensure accompanying forms carry all necessary information and signatures.
- Perform specimen storage and properly discard specimens and/or articles adhering to the Laboratory’s policy and procedure.
- Properly process (centrifuge, separate or freeze) all specimens after collection and receipt to insure integrity of specimen is not compromised.
- Inventory supplies at various drawing stations and help develop order list to replenish stock.
- Notify appropriate Lab personnel when delivering a specimen that must be run STAT.
- Effectively train and instruct staff and student interns in the proper collection of blood and urine specimens including pediatric specimens.
- Coordinate vehicle maintenance – including making sure oil changes are current and doing weekly inspection of each vehicle for cleanliness and dings/scratches.
- Receive Phlebotomy orders from nursing homes/home draws and assist in organizing the work for maximum efficiency.
- Perform quarterly routine quality assurance surveys at off site draw stations.
- Go to the offsites as needed to provide supervision, address issues.
- Assist in providing coverage for Phlebotomy, Waived Testing Tech, Lab Aide, and Central Receiving call-ins.
- Have a lead role in scheduling the Health Fairs.
- Ensure timer verification checks are done quarterly at FMC and CSQ.
- Ensure that Patient Care Center temperature logs are sent in monthly and temps are in range.
- Thermometer maintenance is performed in a timely manner, appropriate records kept.
- Ensure that Patient Services Centers centrifuge maintenance in complete.
- Assist with Laboratory specimen problem folder.
- Assist with laboratory support concerns.
- Inventory and maintain proper stocking levels of supplies required by the lab, recommend purchases for resupply.
- Schedules couriers, as well as routes for pickup and delivery.
- Assist in scheduling phlebotomy, lab aides, and waive tech staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s degree preferred
NYS Clinical Technologist License preferred
Strong Phlebotomy skills and excellent technical skills
Working Conditions:
- Requires flexibility as travel to off-site locations is required.
- Position requires the use of a courier vehicle, either hospital’s or personal, if needed, to pick up specimens at any/all of the physician offices, clinics, or nursing homes that have a laboratory contract with Oswego Hospital.
- Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, sharp needles and objects.
- Requires ability to lift, move, carry, push or pull up to 30 lbs. using proper body mechanics and/or available equipment.
- Requires specified isolation procedures according to policies and procedures, occasional use of personal protective equipment to ensure safety and infection control.
- Attendance ensures that job requirements are met.
- Actively participates in Quality Assurance programs and CQI.
- Occasionally requires cross-training, in-service programs, mandatory classes, and assignments to other units/shifts as needs require.
- Complies with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations.
Pay Range: $23.00-$26.00/hr
Employee salary is based on commensurate experience and other qualifications.
