The State University of New York Empire State College is SUNY’s open, statewide liberal arts college. SUNY Empire students learn face to face, at more than 35 locations throughout the state and at eight international sites, entirely online and through a blend of both. Most students are working adults. Many are raising families and meeting civic commitments in the communities where they live, while studying part time. SUNY Empire was founded in 1971 to provide nontraditional students with greater access and more opportunities to complete an associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree through nontraditional approaches to higher education. Many students bring college-level learning, in addition to transfer credit, with them to the college. SUNY Empire is recognized around the world for working with students to evaluate their learning and to award college credit for college-level learning, which saves time and money. The college pairs each undergraduate student with a mentor, who also is a member of the faculty and who supports that student throughout his or her college career. Mentors and students work together to design an individual degree program tailored to the students’ needs and goals. Students and mentors engage in guided independent study and coursework onsite, online, or through a combination of both, which provides the flexibility for students to choose where, when, and how to learn. Students also have the opportunity to enroll five times during the year.
