Job Description	The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse University is looking to an individual to teach COM 107 Communications and Society on Tuesdays/Thursdays 8:00am-9:20am during the Fall 2024 semester (3 credits). Course Description: The two over-arching themes for this course are 1) the impact of new digital technologies on existing “old” media, and 2) the evolution of communication from “mass” to niche or even “personal.” These themes are examined with an eye toward the ethics of communication practice, especially in a multicultural environment. The course examines various issues of history, effects and economics that face the industries that comprise journalism, strategic communication (public relations and advertising), and entertainment media. Instructors coordinate across sections on common assignments, grade weights and structures, but each instructor nonetheless covers the material utilizing their own strengths and perspectives. The instructor of this course should be well versed in the practices and issues facing all of these various industries.
Qualifications	Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Experience teaching at the university level is a plus.

Responsibilities	It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following: Developing an/or updating a class syllabus. Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the start date. Preparation of lectures, projects, or other student assignments. Preparing Lab based instruction and technical support. Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course. Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and your plan to cover the class. Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations. Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others. Grading student assignments and examinations in a timely manner. Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
Physical Requirements	• Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet. • Ability to hold office hours on campus. • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
Tools/Equipment	Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
