Job Description | The Department of Art within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-time Instructor to teach First Year Studio I & II, each 3 credit hours, during the Fall & Spring semesters, 2024-25. Multiple sections are posted. This is for both the fall and spring semesters of this two-semester class sequence. In the fall, the faculty will guide the students through a series of dynamic projects to explore different media and formats (such as monoprints, collage, hand-drawn typography, cardboard sculpture, and plaster casting). Focus on visual language (composition, color, etc.) and introduce visual inquiry (ideation, experimentation, problem-solving, research). In the spring, we will continue the use of 2D and 3D media and introduce some time-based or narrative work (such as performance, GIFs, comics, or flip books). Culminate the semester with a final open-ended art project inspired by student research done in the library. About The College of Visual and Performing Arts The College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University is committed to the education of cultural leaders who will engage and inspire audiences through performance, visual art, design, scholarship, and commentary. We provide the tools for self-discovery and risk-taking in an environment that thrives on critical thought and action. Qualifications | The applicant must possess an MFA in art or design, or equivalent professional experience. Teaching experience at the college level, or experience in assisting a class, preferred. |
Job Specific Qualifications | We are looking for people who are capable of teaching a wide range of physical 2D, 3D, and 4D media at an introductory level. We wish to expose students to a variety of ways of working, have them explore visual language across media, and practice the processes of ideation and critique. |
Responsibilities | Must teach the class for the full class period each week, do appropriate class prep and grading, and hold 2 hours of office hours each week. Introduce the class to a range of art media, plus composition, experimentation, ideation, problem-solving, and critique. Meet with the faculty teaching other sections of the course a few times over the semester. Students will participate in one or two exhibitions over the course of the year. Instructors must help coordinate the installation of these shows, largely during class time.
