Job Description	School of Architecture seeks a part-time instructor(s) to teach building systems courses during the Fall 2024 semester. Because of the course schedule, we are looking to hire either one individual to teach two courses, ARC 222 and ARC 423/623; or two individuals, one to teach ARC 222 and another to teach ARC 322/622. In your letter, please indicate for which scenario you are applying, or if you would like to be considered for all scenarios. ARC 222: Building Systems I This lecture course provides as introduction to materials and methods of building systems, technical documentation, building performance, and codes, and builds on the basic concepts established in ARC 121: Introduction to Building and Structural Systems. The key objective of the course is to teach students how to put together a building based on design intent and performative demands, present buildings as an interconnected network of systems, components, and materials, introduce criteria for selecting construction systems and materials, and teach conventions and standards of construction drawings. Teaching is at the undergraduate level. The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am-12:20pm. ARC 322/622: Building Systems II This lecture course examines the background, design, integration, and performance of the energy and environmental systems deployed to control light, thermal comfort, sound, water, and power in buildings. The course presents health and life safety standards in relation to building design organization, material assembly, form-finding, and space planning. Thermal, ventilation, lighting, and acoustical systems are introduced through technological paradigms and their interrelationships with architectural movements, cultural and theoretical milieus, and structures of project origination and development. Important and emerging codes and standards are framed relative to industry performance metrics, and simulation and analysis software and other tools for evaluation of systems are implemented. Teaching is at the undergraduate and graduate level. The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am-12:20pm. ARC 423/623: Advanced Building Systems This lecture course highlights conventional and emerging technologies in construction, building enclosures, mechanical systems, parametric design and simulation tools, and regulatory policy and sustainable standards in relation to integrated architectural design. The course advances technical ramifications of specific design choices, the implications of collaborating with various consultants and contractors, and the influence of culture, politics, economy, environment, and other outside factors on the building process. Course lectures demonstrate a range of significant ways in which architects have used building technology – including structural, environmental conditioning, exterior envelope, and interior enclosure systems – to reinforce architectural concepts as well as to achieve the performance goals of these systems. Teaching is at the undergraduate and graduate level. The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:50am.
Qualifications	A professional degree in Architecture is required, as well as an advanced degree in Architecture or a closely related design field.
Job Specific Qualifications	The School of Architecture is particularly interested in candidates with extensive experience in professional practice and teaching experience in an accredited professional architecture program. Candidates with strong intellectual and technical capacity are encouraged to apply. The School of Architecture is committed to supporting diversity in its student population, faculty, and curriculum.
Responsibilities	Those of a part-time faculty member teaching a 3-credit hour course, including: Developing and/or updating a class syllabus. Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date. Preparation of lectures, projects, or other student assignments. Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours. Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course. Attending all designated class periods. Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to Syracuse Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner. Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
