Job Description | The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach COM 697.1 Advertising and Public Relations Law Media Law on Mondays 9:30am-12:15pm in the the Spring 2025 semester (3 credits). Course Description: This graduate seminar course examines the major legal and policy issues related to the practice of advertising and public relations. Topics covered include the First Amendment, corporate speech, advertising regulations, intellectual property, and defamation. This course will explore how communication is regulated in the various media. Class discussion will address legal issues advertising and public relations professionals may face in the workplace, and the impact of law and policy on diverse audiences. Our studies will address diversity both in terms of society, opinion, and viewpoint. The seminar meets once a week and typically has between 15 and 20 Master’s students from the PR and Advertising graduate programs. Instructor should have a law degree or previous experience teaching communications law at the collegiate level and relevant knowledge of the industries involved. |

Job Specific Qualifications | Instructor should have legal experience or expertise. Priority given to applicants with university level teaching experience. |
Responsibilities | It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following: • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus. • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date. • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments. • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours. • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course. • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class. • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations. • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner. • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations. |
Physical Requirements | • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet. • Ability to hold office hours on campus. • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations. |
Tools/Equipment | • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc. |
