Job Description | Perform a variety of special cleaning operations to preserve and maintain floors and other surfaces and perform special project operations. |
Education and Experience | The ability to read, write and follow instructions is required. At least 1 year experience in janitorial work is required. Knowledge of cleaning products and their use and proper operation of equipment is required. |
Skills and Knowledge | A valid driver’s license and Syracuse Driver Safety Program is required. Use of Departmental Radio is required. |
Responsibilities | Strip, scrub, wax and polish floors of various compositions. Shampoo rugs. Scrub drained pools. Screen and apply finish to gym floors; floor line maintenance. Mix cleaning solutions, empty and flush tanks. Lubricate machines and adjust for proper operation. Move furniture. |
Physical Requirements | Standing 85% – 90% of the shift • Frequent bending at the waist; able to bend to below the knee (80 – 90% of shift) • Frequent stooping and/or crouching (65% – 95% of shift) • Frequent twisting and bending of head, neck, and torso (75 – 95% of shift) • Full range of hand, wrist and arm movement required (extension, twisting, and bending of arm and shoulder, dusting, mixing, washing, reaching overhead, etc.) (80% – 95% of shift) • Fine motor skills sufficient to us a handheld radio, phone, etc. • Visual and cognitive capability sufficient to read labels and follow instructions • Auditory ability to hear and respond to emergency calls (on phone and radio) • May be exposed to latex or rubber • Exposure to cleaning solutions • Physical strength sufficient to handle professional scrubbing machine, shampooer etc • Able to carry up to 30 lbs. on back for 6-8 hours • Able to lift up to 50 pounds to waist height • Able to push/pull items of up to 70 pounds (including e.g. furniture) • Exposure to cleaning solutions, aerosols, chemicals, dust, strong smells, organic waste etc. • Able to work in the evening and at night |
Tools/Equipment | Use a variety of soaps, cleansers, chemicals, and cleaning compounds, and other appropriate materials as needed. Operate a variety of equipment including a buffer, rug shampooer, sander, spray tank, and other appropriate tools/equipment as needed. |
