Job Description
The Residence Director for the South Campus Community engages in day-to-day operational, administrative, and programmatic initiatives supporting Residential Living. The position serves approximately 2,400 students residing in University-owned South Campus apartments and traditional residence halls while also supporting initiatives serving more than 12,000 students living in off-campus neighborhoods, including commuter students.

Responsibilities include development and implementation of the community’s educational curriculum; mentoring and coaching up to nine Resident Advisors; crisis intervention and conflict mediation; participation in an on-call crisis response rotation; resolution of violations of institutional policies and the Code of Student Conduct; planning and implementing programs designed to support students transitioning to more independent living; and coordinating outreach and engagement efforts that support student wellbeing and community expectations.

The Residence Director maintains a visible presence within the South Campus community and works closely with students, student employees, campus partners, and professional staff to support student engagement, community development, conflict resolution, and preparation for successful off-campus living.
Education and Experience
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a master ’s degree is preferred, and prior Residence Life/Student Affairs experience is preferred.

Other Relevant Experiences Considered:
  • Experience working with apartment-style/independent living environments preferred.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong administrative skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to handle multiple priorities and work across many different constituencies.
  • Knowledge of student organization advising and conflict resolution skills.
Responsibilities
Residential Education for South Campus Students:
  • This is a highly visible position in the South Campus community and in the Goldstein Student Center, actively connecting with students.
  • This position lives on campus in the South Campus apartment area. This position directs the implementation of the South Campus apartment and Skyhall curriculum.
  • This position participates in the development and implementation of large-scale initiatives for South Campus focused on student transitions and life skill development for independent living, educating students in traditional residence halls to prepare them for independent living, and supports initiatives of the Off-Campus Residential Living team.
  • Ensures programs are meeting the needs of specific populations living on South Campus, including, but not limited to, international students, veterans, and athletes.
  • Provides support and referral to students experiencing conflicts, concerns, and quality-of-life issues.
Supervision:
  • Trains, supervises, and participates in the formal and informal evaluation process with anywhere from 25 – 35 paraprofessional staff in their assigned area, including Community Ambassadors, Main Desk Assistants, and Goldstein Student Center package room attendants.
  • Mentors/coaches up to nine Resident Advisors, including their training, oversight, and feedback processes.
  • The opportunity may exist to train, supervise, and evaluate a graduate practicum student.
  • Provides indirect supervision of one administrative specialist and leadership of students engaged in voluntary capacities.
  • Holds regular South Campus Community Ambassador (SCCA) staff meetings and Resident Advisor (RA) staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information and one-on-one meetings with SCCAs and RAs.
  • Manages staff feedback and performance concerns. Engages in the performance partnership process.
Communications and Operations:
  • Adheres to regular University business hours, maintaining a presence in the Goldstein Student Center, as well as after-hours requirements essential for programs, meetings, and trainings.
  • Develops and utilizes processes for providing engaging information to students living off-campus, including the development and use of social media.
  • Develops relationships with New Student Programs, Student Engagement, Center for International Services, and Athletics, among others, to ensure timely communication to students residing on South Campus.
  • Strengthens relationships with the Department of Public Safety to promote student safety.
  • Works with the Housing Office to learn of enrolled students who sign up to live in a South Campus apartment each year to develop targeted programmatic initiatives.
  • Ensures RAs have knowledge of procedures, policies, and practices essential to supporting students off campus.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director and Director, assists in the management of the programming and operating budgets.
  • With the support of the Apartment and Off-Campus Residential Living team, assist with communications and operations on South Campus, including opening, closing, health and safety inspections, trash, noise, etc.
Crisis Response:
  • Serves in tier 1 on-call rotation with other Residential Living staff.
  • When on-call, the Residence Director, South Campus Community, is responsible for first-line response to 14,000+ students living on- and off-campus.
  • Refers students to additional University resources as necessary, including Barnes Center, Dean of Students Office, Hendricks Chapel, Housing Office, etc.
Professional Development:
  • Engages in professional development and learning specifically related to the position and equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion (EDAI).
  • Adheres to the Association of College and University Officers-International (ACUHO-I), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), and American College Personnel Administrators (ACPA) ethical standards.
  • Serves on University, Divisional, and Departmental Committees as requested.
  • Exhibits the ability to engage in in-depth self-reflection and apply what he/she has learned to their professional and personal lives.
  • Provides a summary of how learning is being incorporated into practice.
  • Presents workshops and training sessions to staff and students.
  • Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process.
  • Participates in Syracuse University and Student Experience division staff development, orientation sessions, and onboarding sessions.
