Job Description
The purpose of the psychiatric nurse practitioner is to evaluate, diagnose, and treat students with mental health concerns. Psychiatric evaluations and ongoing pharmacotherapy or medication management are the primary responsibilities. The psychiatric nurse practitioner will work collaboratively with SU mental health counselors and medical providers to coordinate the care of students with mental health needs. Other duties include facilitating referrals, collaborating with outside providers, participation in a chart review process, assisting with psychiatric care protocols and serving on committees as assigned, as well as possible on-call duties.
Education and Experience
  • Doctorate of Nursing Practice or Masters of Science in Nursing from Accredited Institution.
  • Certification as Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and licensed to practice in New York State.
  • National Board Certification from ANCC or AANP.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Candidate must be able to perform assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow up of students presenting with mental health disorders.
  • Case management and collaboration with psychiatrist and treating therapists will also be necessary.
  • May involve some limited on-call duties.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse population.
  • Experience working with college population preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Perform psychiatric assessments, formulate treatment plans, initiate medication management and counseling patients about medication.
  • Establish relationship with community psychiatrist to participate in collaborative treatment plans.
  • Work collaboratively with other mental health providers at SU including medical staff at Health Services, the Counseling Center and PSC, as well as psychiatric and psychological providers in the local community.
  • Engage in opportunities to educate the student body on mental health issues, in collaboration with others from the Health and Wellness Portfolio.
