Job Overview
The Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Intern plays a key role in executing assigned Engineer tasks. This includes setting up, operating, cleaning, and troubleshooting production equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist engineers in supporting the daily operation of automation, controls, and process equipment within Byrne facilities.
- Participate in supervised troubleshooting of instrumentation, sensors, and electromechanical systems by collecting data, observing workflows, and documenting findings.
- Perform equipment performance checks, data logging, and root‑cause information gathering to support uptime, quality, and operational efficiency initiatives.
- Support preventive maintenance activities by completing assigned documentation, assisting with calibration tasks, and shadowing controls staff performing hands‑on work.
- Learn PLC, HMI, and SCADA fundamentals and assist with small programming updates, testing, or screen modifications under direct supervision.
- Maintain and update engineering and related project documentation, including change logs, wiring diagrams, device inventories, and system configuration records.
- Assist in tracking equipment performance and generating reports that support operational decision‑making and engineering improvements.
- Collaborate with production, maintenance, quality, and operations teams to understand process flows and identify improvement opportunities.
- Adhere to food safety, sanitation, quality, and safety procedures (GMPs, SQF, PPE usage, LOTO standards) while learning safe engineering practices within a regulated environment.
- Participate in an optional capstone project each summer focused on improving a process, workflow, or piece of technology, culminating in a brief presentation to a select group of Byrne leaders.
Min. Qualifications
- Minimum of GED or High School Diploma.
- Relevant technical trade, military training, or technical college coursework/training preferred.
